Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Confirmed

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced over a million residents.

Authorities reported that the massive storm caused extensive flash flooding, coastal inundation, mudslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million people nationwide.

Widespread Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded rising waters climbing to the tops of houses and residences being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel rescued 14 individuals who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. “A father frantically contacted us, saying his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We saved him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, authorities confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a severe tropical storm early Monday as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts peaked at over 170 mph.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to accommodate 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing before moving on to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for those still missing were halted on Sunday due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

Global warming is causing cyclones stronger and frequent. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers have found that the rate of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has increased doubled over the last two decades.

International estimates indicate that intense storms cause approximately US$3.5 million in losses to the country annually.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration on Thursday because of the severe damage caused by Kalmaegi and the expected damage from the new storm.
